Genealogy — An Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder

Genealogy is fun, habit forming, for everyone, addictive, a great hobby, obsessive…

There has been a renewed interest in genealogy in recent years. With the advent of the Internet and searchable databases, everyone can be an amature genealogist. There are many ways for the beginner to learn the basics in genealogy. There are online classes, adult education classes, even television shows. Unfortunately, many people start out with no instruction, "it's just a hobby, something for fun, it's not that important." This lack of instruction lasts up until the first time you try to find the source you used to prove Great Grandmother Alice was related to a Rockefeller.

This Web site is a very basic guide for beginners and will stress the basic tools needed to begin the hobby that will last generations. For more information, you can use the links in the "Useful Links" page found in the "Navigational Links" section to the left. For your convenience I have listed all forms discussed in this Web site on one page, use the Forms link at the left.

Sure, a real job would be nice, but it would interfere with my genealogy!

Isn't genealogy fun? The answer to one problem, leads to two more!

I want to find ALL of them! So far I only have a few thousand.

You find an old family photo album and upon close examination, there are no names on the pictures.

Genealogy - it's only an obsession after all!

Genealogy: Better than the best adventure game and just as frustrating.

Genealogy: Collecting dead relatives and sometimes a live cousin!

I checked out my family tree. Just as I thought... poison ivy!
